Tinubu made the remarks while addressing party leaders and supporters at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja shortly after being declared winner of the All Progressives Congress presidential primary election.
The President said he understands the pain and sacrifices Nigerians have endured over the past three years as a result of the government’s fiscal and economic reforms.
Reflecting on the challenges of leadership, Tinubu noted that the burden of rebuilding the country has also affected him personally.
He said, “I know what it takes to reform this nation we met in tatters. If you lost sleep, I’ve lost some too. If you’ve lost weight, I’ve lost some too.
“But I’ve always remembered one thing: in 2022, I asked for this job. You all supported me and I got it. So I must do it.”
Tinubu also praised the conduct of the APC primary election, expressing satisfaction that the exercise was peaceful and free of violence.
According to him, he monitored events across the country after casting his vote and was encouraged by the turnout and atmosphere in states such as Kano, Kaduna, and Cross River.
He added that the peaceful nature of the exercise reflected the kind of democratic politics Nigeria should embrace.
Tinubu secured 10,999,162 votes in the direct primary election conducted across all 774 local government areas and 8,809 wards nationwide, defeating his only challenger, Stanley Osifo, who polled 16,503 votes.
