Iyabo Obasanjo Reveals Family Reason Behind Late APC Entry

Former Ogun State Commissioner for Health and daughter of ex-Nigerian President, Iyabo Obasanjo, has revealed why she delayed joining the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Obasanjo returned to active politics after nearly 15 years and officially joined the ruling APC ahead of the 2027 general elections in Ogun State.

Speaking on Wednesday during a feature on Frontline, a current affairs program on Eagle 102.5 FM, Ilese Ijebu, she explained that although she could have left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) much earlier, she refrained from doing so while her father, Olusegun Obasanjo, was still a prominent figure in the party.

She said, “APC never approached me. I know there’s a lot of outreach efforts to bring people in, but I was never contacted. For me, joining was a personal choice. It wasn’t a matter of APC pressuring me. I evaluated the situation and realized the main reason I wanted to leave PDP was that I no longer felt comfortable there.

“I could have joined another party at the time, but my father was still a chieftain in that party. It would have seemed like I was acting against him. Now, since he no longer belongs to any party and has torn up his card, I’m a free agent. It’s not that I couldn’t have made my own decision back then; I could. But I wanted to avoid the impression that I was going against him.”
