The JAC, which includes the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP), and the Non-academic Staff Union (NASU), held a press briefing in Yola over the weekend. They condemned a petition submitted by a group identifying itself as “Concerned Citizens,” which accused the management of mismanaging the polytechnic’s finances. The unions labeled the petition as nothing more than mischief and a fabrication.
During the press briefing, led by ASUP Chairman Kadala Bandi, the unions urged both the authorities and the public to disregard the petition, which they described as concocted by a faceless group.
The petition, reportedly written by one Mohammed Aliyu, a human rights lawyer, called for an investigation by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) into the polytechnic’s financial management. However, the three unions under JAC strongly rejected the allegations, stating that the petition had no foundation in reality.
Bandi, reading from the joint statement, stated, “We can confidently assert that the Council has always acted within the bounds of the law. A careful review of the petition reveals a clear lack of understanding of the Governing Council’s operations within the polytechnic system.”
He further pointed out specific inaccuracies in the petition, including a claim that the Governing Council had interfered in academic and administrative processes—areas that fall within the Council’s legitimate authority.
The unions emphasized that the petition was nothing but a falsehood, designed to tarnish the reputation of the institution’s leadership.
