The Jigawa State Police Command apprehended a 32-year-old man, Samuel Shegun, in connection with the brutal killing of his mother, Esther Adekanla, a restaurant owner known as Hadiza Nakowa. The tragic incident unfolded in Dutse town on February 15, 2024, when the lifeless body of Adekanla was discovered in her house.
Her 11-year-old daughter, Christiana, was found unconscious in a locked storage room. The State Commissioner of Police, CP AT Abdullahi, disclosed during a press briefing on February 27, 2024, that the arrest was made after detectives tracked the deceased woman’s phone number.
According to CP Abdullahi, the suspect claimed he intervened in a dispute between his mother and his sister, stating that they all fell during the altercation, causing his mother to accidentally cut herself on the neck with a knife.
The commissioner provided a timeline of events, noting that on February 15, 2024, Esther Adekanla was reported missing, leading detectives to her residence. Upon forcing open the locked door, they discovered her lifeless body with visible cuts on her head and neck. Christiana, the young house help, was found alive but unconscious in a locked storage room, with cuts on her head.
Photographs were taken, and both the deceased and the injured house help were swiftly taken to Rasheed Shekoni Teaching Hospital for medical examination. Esther Adekanla was confirmed dead, and her corpse was later conveyed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) for autopsy.
During interrogation, Samuel Shegun confessed that on February 12, 2024, his mother returned home, and a dispute ensued with Christiana. Attempting to rescue the girl, they fell, and his mother accidentally cut herself. Fearing legal consequences, Shegun stole his mother’s phones, locked the house, and fled the area. He initially inserted his SIM card into one of the phones but later disposed of it to an unknown person.
Christiana is currently under medical care, recovering from various injuries sustained during the tragic incident. The investigation continues to unfold the details surrounding this heartbreaking case.
