Super Eagles legend John Obi Mikel has backed Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton to make a major move to Manchester United next summer, predicting that the England international could leave Selhurst Park in 2027.

Mikel, a former Chelsea and Nigeria midfielder, made the prediction while speaking on the Obi One Podcast, where he expressed his strong admiration for the 22-year-old midfielder.

The former Chelsea star believes Palace could retain Wharton for another season before allowing him to pursue a new challenge, with Manchester United emerging as his predicted destination.

“I love him! I love Adam Wharton, I’m a big, big fan,” Mikel said, before suggesting that the midfielder could leave Palace next season and move to Old Trafford.

Wharton has continued to establish himself as an important figure in Crystal Palace’s midfield, with his composure, technical ability and performances attracting attention from several top Premier League clubs.

Mikel’s prediction is particularly notable given his own history with Manchester United, having famously been involved in a transfer saga with the club during his playing career.

However, there is currently no confirmed agreement between Wharton and Manchester United, meaning Mikel’s comments remain a prediction rather than confirmation of an impending transfer. Reports have previously linked the midfielder with interest from several major Premier League clubs.

Wharton is also under contract with Crystal Palace until June 2029, a situation that gives the club a strong negotiating position should Manchester United or another interested side make a formal approach.

Manchester United have continued to reshape their midfield, but Mikel believes Wharton could still become a target for the club in 2027 if he maintains his current development.

For now, the midfielder remains a Crystal Palace player, with any potential move to Old Trafford dependent on future negotiations and the player’s continued progress.
