The author, Mr. Bello Adoke, was the attorney-general at the time. He was pursued across the globe,” Jonathan said. “But today, he stands strong, healthy, and ready to share his story.”
The former president applauded Adoke’s resilience, describing the challenges he endured as politically motivated persecution from the administration that succeeded his.
“After my administration ended in 2015, many of my officials were subjected to what appeared to be a politically charged manhunt,” Jonathan noted. “To some, this is simply a book launch, but to others, it is a celebration of triumph over injustice.”
Reaffirming his long-held belief, Jonathan emphasized that no nation can progress without justice, fairness, and adherence to due process.
“Across all civilisations, it is known that societies that fail to promote justice and fairness can neither know peace nor achieve meaningful development,” he stated.
He clarified that Adoke’s memoir was not intended to attack individuals but to provide historical clarity and contribute to national discourse.
“The author’s intention in writing this book is to correct the record and uphold the principles of truth and justice—pillars essential to nation-building,” Jonathan said.
He also urged public officials to recognize the fleeting nature of power and to serve with integrity and purpose.
“Power is a gift from God. Those entrusted with public office must seize the moment to uphold truth, justice, and fairness,” he advised.
Jonathan concluded by expressing pride in Adoke’s determination and bravery in telling his side of the OPL 245 story.
