Just 13,000 Police Officers Assigned To Combat Banditry In Nigeria – Deji Laments

Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has condemned the Nigerian Police Force for deploying only 13,000 officers to combat banditry, despite the country’s ongoing security challenges. Speaking in a video shared on TikTok, Adeyanju expressed frustration, stating that even young individuals involved in cybercrime can command a security detail of four to five police officers.

He elaborated, “Let me explain how dire the situation is in this country: only 13,000 police officers are actually engaged in the fight against banditry and terrorism. This can be verified through the Nigeria Police Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) or the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act. Meanwhile, 130,000 officers are assigned to follow around influential figures.”

Adeyanju further highlighted the overstaffing of security around legislators, stating, “In the Senate and House of Representatives alone, there are 3,600 police officers attached to jobless senators and representatives. Is it any wonder that insecurity continues to thrive in this country?”

He concluded by drawing attention to the misuse of police resources, noting, “Only in Nigeria will you find a low-level fraudster with four or five policemen as his aides. The situation is grim, and I regret to say, the country is in a precarious state.”
