JUST IN: Ex-Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello Receives New Court SummonsThe Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has issued a new summons to former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello. According to Naija News, Bello has been ordered to appear before the court on November 14, 2024, in relation to allegations of criminal breach of trust and unlawful possession of property.

The summon, issued by Justice Maryann E. Anenih, covers offenses allegedly committed by Bello between 2016 and 2023. The court order, dated October 3, 2024, was shared by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on their official X account.

Court documents accuse Bello of violating Section 311 of the Penal Code Law, which pertains to criminal breach of trust, and Section 319A, relating to the possession of property suspected to have been unlawfully acquired. The public summons reads: “A complaint has been made on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that you, Yahaya Adoza Bello, sometimes within the year 2016 up until 2023… did commit offences to wit: criminal breach of trust… and having possession or control of property reasonably suspected to have been unlawfully obtained.”

The EFCC has requested Bello’s appearance in “High Court No. 3, Maitama, on November 14, 2024, at 9 a.m.”

Naija News recalls that the EFCC previously declared Bello wanted and has since raised new allegations, accusing him of involvement in a N110 billion fraud. Initially, the commission filed 19 charges against Bello, his nephew Ali Bello, Dauda Suliman, and Abdulsalam Hudu for money laundering activities amounting to N80.2 billion. However, the new charges, filed on September 25, have increased the alleged amount to N110.4 billion.

In September, Yahaya Bello visited the EFCC’s headquarters in Abuja alongside his successor, Governor Usman Ododo, but was not questioned. The EFCC viewed this visit as a strategic move rather than an attempt to comply with legal procedures.

EFCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwujaren, stated during an interview on Arise TV that Bello’s visit on September 18 was a public relations effort. In the same month, an attempt by the EFCC to arrest Bello was unsuccessful.
