Former allies turned adversaries, Philip Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki’s political fallout over Shaibu’s gubernatorial aspirations has taken center stage in Edo State politics.
Addressing the rift, Governor Obaseki asserted that he couldn’t endorse Philip Shaibu’s bid to succeed him as the state’s leader due to perceived risks involved.

While accusations of betrayal have surfaced against Obaseki, the governor maintained that the complex political dynamics in Edo State didn’t favor Shaibu’s gubernatorial ambitions.
During a recent appearance on a Channels TV program, Governor Obaseki clarified, “It was evident that the odds were stacked against his ambition to succeed me, and I couldn’t take that risk on behalf of the Edo people.”
Shaibu, in response to his impeachment, condemned the move as an assault on democracy, attributing it to his intention to contest the Edo State 2024 governorship election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a social media video post, Shaibu emphasized, “This impeachment was orchestrated due to my ambition, a legal right of every Nigerian citizen. It represents a perilous slide into dictatorship and poses a threat to our democratic foundations.”
The fallout between Obaseki and Shaibu underscores the intricacies of power dynamics and personal ambitions in Nigerian politics, leaving a significant impact on the political landscape of Edo State.
