The two-day summit, which concludes on Saturday, precedes the 67th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, scheduled for Sunday, June 22, 2025, at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.
WAES is a new regional initiative championed by President Tinubu in his role as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority. It is designed to deepen economic integration and strengthen trade and investment collaboration across West Africa.
Presidents of Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Senegal, The Gambia, Benin, Togo, and Guinea-Bissau are among the leaders confirmed to attend. The summit aims to produce actionable outcomes that will accelerate regional integration — viewed as essential to achieving lasting peace, stability, and prosperity in West Africa.
Also expected at the summit are Ministers of Finance, Trade, Infrastructure, and Foreign Affairs from ECOWAS member states, alongside representatives from key regional institutions including:
-
West African Monetary Agency (WAMA)
-
West African Monetary Institute (WAMI)
-
ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID)
-
West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA)
-
African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat
Private sector leaders, development partners, and policy experts are also actively participating.
To reinforce his commitment to inclusive regional dialogue, President Tinubu extended summit invitations to the Alliance of Sahelian States and Mauritania. In advance of the gathering, he dispatched a team of Special Envoys led by Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu and Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, his Senior Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs and International Relations, to personally deliver the invitations.
