The Senate on Thursday confirmed Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Ude, SAN, from Enugu State, as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, following a screening session that briefly stirred tension among lawmakers.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Born in 1978, Ude previously served as the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Enugu State before being nominated by President Bola Tinubu to replace Uche Nnaji, who resigned amid controversy over his academic and NYSC credentials.

During the screening, Senator Abdul Ningi asked the nominee to comment on the ongoing diplomatic row sparked by former U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat toward Nigeria — a question that prompted murmurs across the chamber. Several senators argued that Ude had already demonstrated competence and should not be drawn into politically sensitive matters.

Ude, maintaining composure, described the issue as one that required “diplomatic management rather than legal confrontation.”

“President Bola Tinubu is handling the matter diplomatically,” he said. “It’s more a question of diplomacy than law.”

His response appeared to calm the chamber, earning nods of approval.

Senator Adamu Aliero later queried whether the offices of the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice should be separated. Ude replied that the effectiveness of either arrangement depends largely on the integrity of the officeholder.

“Whether the offices are merged or separated, success depends on the individual — on whether he allows himself to be politically influenced,” Ude stated.

Satisfied with his responses, the Senate adopted the long-standing tradition of allowing distinguished nominees to “take a bow and go.” Ude was confirmed moments later by a unanimous voice vote.

His confirmation restores Enugu State’s representation in the Federal Executive Council and marks a significant milestone, making him one of the youngest Senior Advocates of Nigeria ever appointed to the federal cabinet.

The Senate’s swift approval of his nomination reflects President Tinubu’s effort to stabilise his cabinet and preserve geopolitical balance within the administration.
