The decision follows the presentation of a report by the standing committee on special duties, which investigated the sale of cooking gas in residential zones during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Hon. Ismail Falgore.

Abdullahi Yahaya, the committee’s chairman and representative for the Gezawa constituency, presented the findings. He revealed that, after consultations with relevant stakeholders, the Kano State Fire Service Directorate identified around 475 illegal cooking gas outlets in the city. Additionally, data from the Nigerian Mainstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NRDPRA) showed 234 unlicensed gas retailers operating in the state.

The investigation was triggered by a motion introduced by Hon. Tasiu Abubakar of the Kiru constituency, who raised concerns about the hazards posed by the unregulated sale of cooking gas in residential areas and the need for clear regulations to safeguard lives and properties.

Highlighting the risks posed by the growing number of unlicensed gas vendors, Yahaya emphasized that the issue is particularly acute in the Kano metropolitan area. Only a small number of retailers in the region are registered with the NMDPRA, and many lack proper training to operate safely and efficiently.

To address the issue, the committee has recommended the establishment of designated sites for gas marketers at the six major entry points into Kano metropolitan area, similar to how sites have been allocated for GSM and pharmaceutical vendors. These locations would be at Hadeja Road, Maiduguri Road, Zaria Road, Madobi Road, Gwarzo Road, and Katsina Road.

After the House approved the report, Hon. Abubakar called on his fellow lawmakers to support the annulment of the Fire Service Edict and implement necessary amendments to improve the regulation and safety of gas sales in the state.

The motion was supported by Hon. Salisu Mohammed, the representative for Doguwa constituency, who backed the initiative for better regulation and safer gas sales.
