Kano Hisbah Detains Trust TV Reporter For Allegedly Offensive Social Media Post

The Kano State Hisbah Corps, known for enforcing Shari’a law among Muslims in the state, has reportedly detained Jamil Mabai, a journalist associated with Trust TV, the broadcasting arm of Media Trust Group. Mabai’s arrest allegedly stems from a social media post where he criticized perceived human rights violations against youths in the state.

According to reports, Mabai was apprehended when he visited the Hisbah office for an interview with the Public Relations Officer (PRO). However, instead of conducting the interview, he was taken into custody.

Taking to social media, Mabai confirmed his arrest, narrating how he was detained after attempting to discuss the case of a DJ who was reportedly shot by Hisbah officials during an event. Despite explaining his purpose as a journalist, Mabai was detained and had his phone confiscated.

During his detention, Mabai claims he was threatened by the commandant of the Hisbah office, who allegedly asserted his authority against any opposition to the organization’s activities.

Mabai, known for his reporting on insecurity and human rights issues in the northern region, asserts that his detention without cause is a violation of press freedom.
