Breaking: Emefiele Pleads Not Guilty To Fresh Charges In Court....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, asserted his innocence in court today, denying allegations that he sanctioned the printing of ₦684.5 million at a staggering rate of ₦18.96 billion. The plea came during his arraignment before Justice Maryann Anenih of the FCT High Court, Abuja, where the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) leveled four charges against him.
In these latest accusations, the EFCC alleges that Emefiele disregarded legal directives, intending to harm the public interest while implementing the naira swap policy under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. Among the charges is the claim that he unlawfully authorized the withdrawal of N124.8 billion from the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the Federation.
This court appearance marks the third set of charges against the former CBN governor. Last year, he faced a six-count charge of procurement fraud, to which he also pleaded not guilty. Among other allegations, he was accused of abusing his authority by approving a contract for purchasing 43 vehicles totaling N1.2 billion between 2018 and 2020. Additionally, in April of this year, Emefiele was arraigned alongside Henry Omoile for an alleged $4.5 billion and N2.8 billion fraud, to which he entered a plea of not guilty.
The fresh charges, filed on April 2, 2024, were presented by EFCC prosecutor Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), alongside eight other legal representatives acting on behalf of the Attorney General of the Federation.
The charges outline instances where Emefiele purportedly violated the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, by approving the printing of various denominations of currency without proper authorization, causing harm to the public interest.
Emefiele’s plea of not guilty sets the stage for legal proceedings to unfold, further shaping the trajectory of this ongoing case
