Kano In Frenzy As Former Attorney General’s Deadly Python Goes Missing

Tension has gripped the residents of Daneji, a densely populated area in the Kano Municipal Local Government Area, after an African rock python reportedly escaped from the private residence of embattled former Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, has thrown the community into a state of fear, with residents abandoning outdoor activities and calling on authorities for immediate action.

Local resident Nurulhaq Kabir Muhammad told Arewa Punch that since the python’s escape, the neighborhood has remained on edge.

“Since the python went missing, everyone is scared. All other animals from the compound were evacuated on Tuesday,” he said.

Another resident, Rabi’u Isma’il, described the atmosphere as “terrifying,” noting that most parents are no longer allowing their children to play outside.

“We can’t even sleep properly. That snake is out there, hiding somewhere,” he added.

Aisha Lawal, a mother of three, also voiced her concerns and appealed for government intervention:

“This isn’t just about a missing snake—it’s about our safety. Authorities must act before this turns tragic.”

Police, Emir of Kano Step In

The Kano State Police Command has launched an investigation into Idris’s ownership of wild animals—reportedly including crocodiles and multiple pythons—kept within the city limits.

Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, confirmed to Punch that Idris was invited for questioning over the incident.

“Yes, we invited the former AGF regarding the exotic animals he keeps at his residence, which have caused fear among the residents,” Bakori said.

He added that Idris had agreed to hand over all dangerous animals to the Kano State Zoological Unit, while an intelligence team has been dispatched to verify the surrender and investigate any possible injuries or casualties related to the escaped python.

Emir of Kano Issues Warning

Amid growing public unrest, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, personally intervened after receiving complaints from Daneji residents.

“If anything happens to anyone, he [Idris] will be held accountable,” the Emir declared, urging Idris to immediately remove all wild animals from his property.

Ahmed Idris, who served under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, is already facing prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for the alleged embezzlement of over ₦109 billion.

Since leaving office, Idris has maintained a low profile—until this latest incident, which has reignited public scrutiny and raised new questions about his conduct and character.
