Kano Lawmaker Reveals Shocking Offer To Back Tinubu’s Tax Reforms

Mustapha Ghali, the representative for Gaya, Ajingi, and Albasu Federal Constituency in Kano State, has elaborated on why the Northern region opposes the tax reform bills proposed by President Bola Tinubu.

Ghali alleged that some sponsors and supporters of the bills have ulterior motives, emphasizing that such reforms should benefit all Nigerians rather than specific regions or states.

Speaking with journalists in Kano, Ghali disclosed that a Southern lawmaker lobbied him to support the controversial bills, assuring him that Kano State would benefit alongside Lagos. However, Ghali rejected the proposal, stating that he advocates for policies that benefit not just Kano but also neighboring states like Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kebbi.

According to Ghali, prioritizing only one or two regions risks creating division, noting that Northern lawmakers have united to address this issue. He stressed the importance of regional harmony and equitable development for all.

Ghali also argued that Nigeria is not yet ready for such tax reforms, calling on the federal government to first provide a conducive environment with improved infrastructure, employment opportunities, schools, and healthcare facilities.

“The tax reform bill has worked in other countries like England, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia because they first created an enabling environment and used taxes to sustain developmental projects,” he said.

He appealed to Northern lawmakers, governors, elders, and other stakeholders to come together and advocate for setting the bill aside until Nigeria is better prepared.

“The North must speak with one voice to ensure the bill is not implemented prematurely,” Ghali concluded.
