The initial arrest was of Alhaji Mohammed Kabawa, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, linked to the alleged multi-billion Naira scam. Subsequently, other prominent figures were detained, including Abdullahi Bashir, Chairman of the Kano State branch of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), and Tauroni LGA.
The accused are alleged to have conspired to award a contract to Novomed Pharmaceuticals for drug supplies intended for 38 local government areas, purportedly ignoring public procurement regulations. Each local government reportedly paid ₦9.1 million for these drugs, which were never delivered.
Kabiru I. Kabiru, the commission’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the arrests and stated that the suspects are cooperating with the ongoing investigation. The commission is working diligently to uncover the full scope of the fraud and ensure accountability. The suspects remain in custody as the investigation continues.
