The Nigerian-born politician made headlines in 2024 for her continued criticism of her country of birth.

During her first speech of the year at an event organized by Onward, a British think tank focusing on economic and social issues, Badenoch emphasized her concern that Britain could follow Nigeria’s path if reforms are not implemented.

The Tory leader stressed the importance of trust, asserting that the Conservative Party is the right group to lead the UK in avoiding a similar fate to Nigeria’s troubled governance.

Reflecting on her experiences with inflation in Nigeria, she stated, “And why does this matter so much to me? It’s because I know what it’s like to have something and then lose it. I don’t want Britain to lose what it has.

“I grew up in a poor country and saw my relatively wealthy family struggle more and more as inflation eroded their wealth despite hard work.

“I returned to the UK at 16 with my father’s last £100, hoping for a better life. I’ve experienced the consequences of terrible governments that destroy lives, and I never want that to happen here.”
