Kenyan Woman Blasts Nigerian Women, Claims They Value Marriage Over Self-Respect
A Kenyan woman has sparked an online debate after responding to a Nigerian man who criticised Kenyan women for allegedly being quick to walk away from marriages.
The Nigerian man had argued that Kenyan women were less willing to tolerate difficulties in marriage, claiming that they often end relationships when their husbands make mistakes. According to his argument, men are human and should be given room to make mistakes rather than having their marriages ended immediately.
Responding to the comments, Kenyan woman Ajusa Atieno offered a contrasting view, making a comparison between Kenyan and Nigerian women and their attitudes toward marriage and relationships.
Atieno alleged that some Nigerian women place greater emphasis on preserving marriage than on maintaining what she described as self-respect. She argued that this, in her view, contributes to Nigerian women remaining in relationships despite difficulties, while Kenyan women may be more willing to leave when certain boundaries are crossed.
“There’s a Nigerian man claiming Kenyan women don’t understand marriage. A small thing and we are out,” Atieno wrote.
She also challenged the argument that men should be excused because they are human, noting that women are human as well and should also be treated with consideration and respect.
Atieno described Kenyan women as willing to demand love, respect and equality in relationships, while criticising what she characterised as an excessive emphasis on marriage among some Nigerian women.
She further stated that marriage should provide an opportunity for partners to grow together and become supportive companions rather than a platform for tolerating behaviour that causes harm or disrespect.
In a series of strongly worded remarks, Atieno said she would not tolerate threats of abandonment, infidelity, verbal aggression or laziness in a relationship. She maintained that partners should understand that relationships require mutual respect, responsibility and commitment.
Her comments have since generated discussion online, with the comparison between Kenyan and Nigerian women’s approaches to marriage prompting varying reactions from social media users.
