Keyamo’s commitment comes on the heels of Nigeria’s recent removal from the Aviation Working Group’s (AWG) watchlist of non-compliant countries, a significant milestone that underscores the nation’s advancements in meeting international aviation safety and regulatory standards.
In an interview with Saturday PUNCH, the minister expressed his excitement over Nigeria’s improved ranking in the Cape Town Convention Compliance Index, where the country’s compliance score rose from 70.5% to 75.5%. This increase played a crucial role in Nigeria’s exit from the AWG watchlist, which had previously spotlighted areas needing enhancement in aviation oversight.
The AWG watchlist is a vital tool for monitoring global aviation safety and ensuring adherence to international regulatory standards. Nigeria’s removal from this list demonstrates its commitment to these standards, enhancing confidence in its aviation regulatory framework.
Keyamo described this development as a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s aviation sector, which he believes is on the brink of “unprecedented growth.” He stated, “That is one of the highest compliance ratings in the world. Because we are fully compliant, they now trust our regulatory authorities to respond effectively in cases of private sector defaults.”
While celebrating this achievement, the minister acknowledged the pressing issues that remain, particularly regarding flight cancellations and inefficiencies in domestic, regional, and international routes. He expressed optimism that with sustained growth and focus, the sector can overcome these challenges.
“This is a vital step toward addressing some of the problems we face in aviation,” Keyamo added, reaffirming his determination to elevate the industry to new heights.
