The victims remain in captivity six days after the incident.
The Chairman of the Eda-Oniyo Progressive Union, Dr. Rufus Ajayi, revealed this during a visit by a delegation from the Ekiti State Government, led by Deputy Governor Monisade Afuye.
Ajayi disclosed that the abducted individuals include women and young children, noting that initial negotiation efforts by the community had not yielded results.
He explained that although the community made an offer, it was rejected by the kidnappers, who are now insisting on a minimum payment of ₦150 million. He appealed to the government to urgently intervene, describing the situation as critical.
The traditional ruler of the town, the Eleda of Eda-Oniyo, Oba Julius Awolola, also called for immediate government action, warning that only swift intervention could curb the rising incidents of abduction and violence in the area.
He said the attack has left residents deeply shaken and living in fear, urging authorities to strengthen security presence, particularly in border communities near Kwara State.
While appreciating the government’s visit and support, the monarch stressed the need for sustained security efforts to restore confidence in the community.
The Ekiti State Government condemned the incident, describing the attack as senseless and unacceptable, and assured residents that steps were being taken to safeguard lives and property.
Governor Biodun Oyebanji stated that his administration is responding proactively to the security challenges and called on residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information.
As part of precautionary measures, he advised religious centres to suspend night vigils for the time being and hold activities during the day.
The governor also warned against any form of collaboration with criminal elements, urging those involved in aiding kidnappers to desist, as such actions put communities at risk and tarnish the image of the state.
