The perpetrators of the abduction of more than 287 schoolchildren in Kuriga village, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, are purportedly demanding N1 billion as ransom from the families of the victims.

According to reports by Naija News, armed assailants raided the school last Thursday morning immediately after the Assembly session, seizing the pupils and several staff members.

Aminu Kuriga, one of the community youth leaders, disclosed to Daily Trust that the bandits contacted them to demand the ransom, stipulating a payment deadline of 20 days. He revealed that the abductors claimed to be situated in the northern part of Zamfara with the children and emphasized the necessity of the N1 billion ransom within the specified timeframe.

Kuriga expressed deep concern over the situation, mentioning that the bandits obtained his contact information through the abducted School Principal, Abubakar Isah, who is his childhood friend. He added that they are fervently praying for divine intervention in this dire circumstance.

Contrarily, President Bola Tinubu has asserted that no ransom will be disbursed for the liberation of the abducted children from Kuriga in Kaduna State. Representing the President, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammad Idris, conveyed Tinubu’s directive to security authorities to ensure the safe rescue of the children.

Idris underscored Tinubu’s stance against ransom payments to kidnappers, affirming the government’s unwavering resolve to combat kidnapping and other criminal activities nationwide. He emphasized that the current administration will not condone kidnapping, particularly mass abductions, and is committed to addressing such heinous acts decisively.
