Following the return, the Cross River State government established several committees to plan the burial but has yet to announce a specific date. Three months later, relatives are growing increasingly frustrated with the slow progress of the preparations.

Some kinsmen suspect ongoing disputes within the Burial Planning Committee, reminiscent of issues faced by the previous committee formed under former governor Ben Ayade. Youth leader Williams Ben commented, “It’s a shame that a prominent figure like our patriarch is treated this way. He was ‘abandoned’ in London, and now his body is again left unattended in his home country.”

However, Chief Ajong Ibed from the Basang community in Obanliku LGA, where Wayas originated, disagreed with the notion of abandonment and dismissed claims of conflicts within the planning committees. He noted, “The various committees have been meeting in Calabar to recommend a suitable burial date to the state governor. I believe the funeral will likely occur after the Local Government Council elections in November 2024.”

Ibed also mentioned that the Works Sub-committee is currently constructing a mausoleum for Wayas’ remains. Additionally, Bassey Otu, the Chairman of the Publicity Committee and Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, clarified that preparations are underway but that the committee is awaiting a suitable date from the Presidency, given that the burial will be a national event. “All committees are working diligently. We are waiting for the Presidency to finalize a date, as Wayas was the third highest official in Nigeria from 1979 to 1983,” Otu stated.
