Kirikiri Road Crisis: House Of Reps Demands Urgent Rehabilitation, Targets Berger-Suya Axis

Published

The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to urgently complete the rehabilitation of Kirikiri Federal Road in Ajeromi-Ifelodun Federal Constituency of Lagos State, following persistent transportation difficulties caused by the road’s deteriorating condition.

The lawmakers specifically called on the agency to prioritise the Berger-Suya axis and resume rehabilitation work on other sections within Ajeromi-Ifelodun that were excluded from previous repair exercises.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the resolution followed a motion sponsored by Hon. Kalejaiye Adeboye Paul, who expressed concern over the failure to complete the project despite an earlier directive issued by the House.

The lawmakers recalled that on October 3, 2023, the House adopted Resolution HR. 192/10/2023 after considering a motion on the need to rehabilitate Kirikiri Federal Road in Ajeromi-Ifelodun Federal Constituency.

The resolution was intended to secure immediate intervention on the deteriorating road. However, the House observed that although FERMA subsequently carried out extensive rehabilitation work on the Amuwo section, the portion within Ajeromi-Ifelodun remained untouched.

Members expressed concern that the incomplete project had continued to create difficulties for residents, commuters, commercial transport operators and business owners, particularly in their daily movement and transportation of goods.

They noted that the objectives of the 2023 resolution had not been achieved, making further legislative intervention necessary to ensure that the neglected sections received urgent attention.

Consequently, the House called on FERMA to assess the condition of Kirikiri Federal Road, paying particular attention to the Berger-Suya axis, while also reviewing the quality of rehabilitation work previously carried out on other sections.

The agency was further urged to identify areas where repairs were defective or below the required standards and carry out necessary corrections in accordance with approved engineering specifications.

FERMA was also directed to return to the designated road corridors in Ajeromi-Ifelodun and accelerate work on all outstanding sections to ensure the project’s completion.

The lawmakers stressed that the agency must fulfil the objectives of the earlier resolution and provide a lasting solution to the road’s deteriorating condition.

To ensure compliance, the House mandated its Committees on Works and FERMA to monitor the implementation of the resolution.
