In a statement issued on Friday night, Kwankwaso, the former Governor of Kano State, argued that voting is a more effective method for confronting an ineffective government compared to protests. He believes that sustainable change can only be realized through the power of the ballot.

Kwankwaso highlighted the ongoing challenges in Nigeria, attributing these difficulties to leadership failures dating back to 2007. He expressed optimism that these issues can be addressed, steering the nation towards economic development, prosperity, and better citizen welfare.

He cited several governance issues, including federal interference in Kano State’s chieftaincy affairs, the impeachment of Edo State’s Deputy Governor, political instability in Rivers State, and pervasive insecurity as symptoms of poor leadership and accountability.

While acknowledging the frustration that has led to calls for protests, Kwankwaso cautioned against the potential violence and chaos that could result. He emphasized that while protests are a democratic right, they often lead to property destruction, loss of life, and further division.

Kwankwaso’s statement read: “Our current hardships stem from missed opportunities by our leaders since 2007. However, there is always a chance for correction and redirection towards economic growth and improved citizen welfare.

“The numerous crises we face, from federal interference in Kano’s chieftaincy matters to widespread insecurity, reflect a deep-seated issue with governance. These problems have contributed to a sense of despair among our youth and citizens.

“As we approach a critical juncture, I urge you to direct your energy towards a more effective and peaceful means of change—using your vote. The impact of protests can be severe, often exacerbating divisions and leaving lasting scars.

“I speak to you not only as a concerned elder but as a believer in our nation’s potential. Let us focus on building the Nigeria we all desire through collective and peaceful efforts.”
