Naija News reports that Balogun was known as a strong opponent of the bandit groups that had been terrorizing the area. Until his untimely death on Monday, he served as the Jagun of Igbaja. According to local sources cited by Channels Television, Balogun was killed by kidnappers who had infiltrated the community on Sunday and subsequently abducted three women.
Additionally, reports indicate that two more individuals were kidnapped from Kajola village early Tuesday morning. The protesters held suspected itinerant cattle herders responsible for the brutal act. Olaitan Oyin-Zubair, Coordinator of the Kwara South Elders Security Forum, confirmed Balogun’s death during a gunfight with the kidnappers while attempting to rescue the abducted individuals.
“Currently, a combined team of police, military, and vigilante members are scouring the forests around Igbaja and Oke-Ode in search of the kidnapped victims,” he stated. Another source revealed that Balogun was part of the team tracking kidnappers who had previously abducted a prominent community member. “It was on the Ogele-Yaaru road that our Balogun was killed,” the source added.
In response to the situation, the paramount ruler of Igbaja, Oba Ahmed Babalola Arepo III, urged the protesters to remain calm, describing Balogun’s death as a significant loss. He assured the youth that those responsible for the crime would be captured and brought to justice.
Femi Yusuf, the Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government Area, who visited the region with a delegation, extended his condolences to the community over the loss of their Jagun. He promised that all efforts would be made to locate and apprehend the kidnappers and those involved in the vigilante leader’s murder.
The spokesperson for the State Police Command, Toun Ejire-Adeyem, confirmed the incident, calling it “unfortunate.” She added that law enforcement is actively pursuing the kidnappers.
