According to Naija News, the debate, organized by Channels Television and set to air on Sunday, November 3, has designated the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Agboola Ajayi, as the leading candidates for the November 16 election.

In a statement released on Saturday, Johnson Egbodofo, Director of Publicity for the Labour Party Campaign Organisation in Ondo State, criticized this characterization and the party’s exclusion. He asserted that labeling the APC and PDP candidates as the only leading contenders misleads voters in Ondo.

Egbodofo emphasized that the Labour Party’s candidate, Olusola Nehemiah Ebiseni, should also be recognized as a leading contender. The party has reached out to Channels Television to address this oversight.

“The Labour Party and its candidates for the upcoming Ondo State Governorship Election have noticed an advertisement by Channels Television promoting a live debate that includes only candidates from the APC and PDP, erroneously described as ‘the two leading candidates in the election,’” the statement said.

The Labour Party expressed its commitment to ensuring fair representation, noting past instances where Channels has hosted debates with multiple candidates without labeling any as “leading.” The party reminded the public of its historical significance in Ondo politics, having governed the state from 2009 to 2017, and criticized the current debate format as potentially manipulative.

“We believe it would be unjust for the debate to proceed as planned, as it could distort the electoral choices of the people,” Egbodofo added. He urged Channels Television to reconsider its approach, highlighting the importance of fair opportunities for all candidates.

The Labour Party remains willing to participate in the debate and expressed skepticism about Channels’ commitment to impartiality. The statement concluded with a call for the network to respect its reputation and pause the debate if it cannot ensure fairness to all political parties involved.
