In the letter, Okupe stated, “I submit herewith my letter of resignation from the Labour Party with effect from today. You will recall that our flagbearer, Mr Peter Obi, myself, and others left the PDP abruptly and had to look for a Special Purpose Vehicle in which to contest the 2023 Presidential Elections.”

He expressed gratitude to the Labour Party, its leadership, and fellow executives for providing them with a platform to contest the elections without any burden. However, Okupe highlighted an ideological conflict, explaining, “This makes it exceedingly difficult for me to continue to stay in the Labour Party which is ideologically rooted in the left of the center. I have been a rightist and a Liberal Democrat all my entire life. It is therefore this ideological conflict that makes me seek an exit so that I may continue my political activities with liberalism, sincerity, and freedom.”

Legislators Extend Annual Vacation, New Return Date Set

Acknowledging the cordiality and respect he received during his role as the Director-General of the Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Organization, Okupe extended his thanks and best wishes to the party for its future endeavors.

This resignation follows Okupe’s withdrawal from the campaign of Peter Obi in 2023, and he reiterated his support for Obi and the campaign in a tweet on his official Twitter handle.

Additionally, the letter attached to the tweet revealed Okupe’s decision to step aside due to personal travails, requesting the appointment of a new Campaign Director-General to continue the assignment without distractions.

Notably, Okupe faced a setback with his conviction on Monday by the Federal High Court in Abuja for money laundering involving N700 million. The conviction was related to illicit funds received from the former National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki intended for arms procurement. Despite a two-year jail sentence, Okupe opted for a fine of N13 million, avoiding imprisonment.

Okupe, a seasoned politician and former spokesperson for the National Republican Convention in the early 1990s, served as a presidential spokesperson for Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan. His conviction presented a challenge for the Obi campaign, which had been focused on accountability and breaking away from the old order.
