Lady Breaks Silence After Mother’s D**th: I Feel Nothing And Won’t Attend Her Funeral

A Nigerian woman has sparked debate online after revealing that she felt no sadness following the death of her mother, whom she said had been estranged from her for several years.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the woman shared her experience in a Facebook post, explaining that she had not spoken to her mother for five years and claimed their relationship had been deeply strained throughout her life.

She said she was informed more than a week before her mother’s death that she was seriously ill and was encouraged to visit her in hospital. According to her account, she went to the hospital but was met with an experience that further reinforced the distance between them.

The woman claimed that her mother was asleep when she arrived, but after waking up and seeing her, she used gestures to indicate that she should leave. She said she subsequently left the hospital.

“My mother and I haven’t spoken in five years. She despised me from birth,” she wrote.

She later revealed that her mother died two days ago and said she was surprised by her own emotional response to the loss.

“Two days ago, she passed away. And strangely enough, I feel nothing. No anger. No tears. Just… nothing,” she stated.

The woman explained that she believed her reaction was connected to the nature of their relationship, arguing that she did not feel she had a meaningful mother-daughter relationship to mourn.

She also disclosed that she had decided not to attend the funeral or contribute financially towards the burial.

“I will not be attending her funeral. I will not be contributing financially towards it,” she said.

According to her, the decision was not intended as punishment but rather as an acceptance of the reality of their estrangement.

“Not because I am trying to punish the dead. But because I am finally accepting that death does not automatically create a relationship that never existed in life,” she added.

The woman acknowledged that her decision could attract criticism from people who believe children should honour their parents regardless of past experiences. She said some people might tell her that she only had one mother, that she should forgive her, or that she could eventually regret not giving her mother a proper burial.

However, she maintained that outsiders might not fully understand the experiences and emotional pain she had endured over the years.

“Maybe. But I also know what it feels like to spend years carrying pain that nobody sees,” she wrote.

She described her situation as an example of the complicated reality that can exist when someone has a parent who did not play what they consider a parental role in their life.

“This is not really about a funeral. It is about the complicated reality of having a parent who never felt like a parent,” she stated.

The woman concluded by questioning whether it is possible to grieve someone with whom there was no meaningful relationship, asking what a person is expected to feel when such a parent dies.

Her account has since generated mixed reactions online, with social media users expressing different perspectives on estrangement, grief, forgiveness and the expectations surrounding family relationships after death.
