The Lagos Geographic Information Service bill, which underwent stakeholder consultations on Friday, seeks to institute a computerized central repository for all geospatial data and associated matters.

According to the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, once enacted, the bill will streamline governance processes and enhance professionalism. He highlighted the bill’s provision, stating that the agency’s mandate includes implementing and upholding best practices for all Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in the state, along with developing and maintaining an online platform for geospatial-related information and statistics.

Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, representing the Speaker, emphasized the bill’s focus on integrating governance with technological advancements to ensure Lagos State remains at the forefront of development.

Chairman of the House Committee on Physical Planning and Urban Development, Hon. Ogunkelu Sylvester, underscored the bill’s significance in advancing information technology and establishing a centralized database for Lagos State. He explained that the proposed legislation would enable citizens to access property certificates and other related documents online, reducing bureaucratic processes and curbing fraudulent land transactions.

Additionally, the bill received commendation from Rasheed Makinde, a former lawmaker, for the Assembly’s proactive approach. Stakeholders also suggested the involvement of professional bodies in shaping the proposed law to ensure its effectiveness.

Overall, the Lagos Geographic Information Service bill represents a concerted effort by the State Assembly to modernize governance processes and enhance transparency in land administration.
