According to Naija News, the operation occurred less than 24 hours before a planned nationwide protest against government policies.
In a statement from Police Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Egbetokun urged the public to stay alert and report any suspicious activity. The statement emphasized, “Following the discovery and successful detonation of an IED on July 31, 2024, by the EOD and CBRN Unit along Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Ikeja, Lagos, the Nigeria Police Force advises citizens to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities or objects to the nearest police station.”
Egbetokun stressed the importance of public awareness and safety. “We encourage everyone to remain alert, be aware of their surroundings, and report any unusual or suspicious behavior. If you encounter a suspicious object, do not touch or move it. Instead, keep a safe distance and notify the police immediately.”
He reassured the public of the force’s dedication to their safety and security. “The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to protecting citizens’ lives and property. We are diligently investigating the source of the IED, dismantling any related plans, and pursuing those responsible. Public cooperation is crucial during these times.”
Egbetokun also highlighted the potential dangers of the IED, stating, “The intentions of those who planted the IED were to cause significant harm to property and people. It is essential to remain vigilant and report any suspicious packages or objects to prevent such dangerous incidents.”
