Obi Describes The Intensive Medical Effort For Onyeka Onwenu

The high-profile celebration was attended by many dignitaries, including Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party. Obi shared a moving account of the events on his X handle on Wednesday.

In his post, Obi recounted the doctors’ efforts to save Onwenu and expressed his profound sorrow over the loss. He remembered Onwenu’s performance and the subsequent tragic events:

“Yesterday was deeply devastating for me as I witnessed a tragic event that will stay with me forever. I attended the event where Onyeka Onwenu performed, ending with her renowned song, ‘One Love Keep Us Together.’

“It was a remarkable performance, but it turned out to be her last. Shortly after, she sat down, drank some water, and collapsed. She was rushed to the hospital, and I followed her there. I watched in anguish as doctors and medical staff worked relentlessly to save her, but despite their efforts, we received the heartbreaking news of her passing.

“After more than two hours of intense medical intervention, she was pronounced dead. My heart goes out to her family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. May we all find strength and solace as we mourn this profound loss.”
