Lagos 2025 Budget Passes Second Reading; Committee Set for One-Month Review
The Lagos State House of Assembly has passed the second reading of the 2025 appropriation bill, totaling N3.005 trillion. The bill was presented by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu last Thursday and was debated by the House on Monday.
Following the debate, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa referred the bill to a joint committee on appropriation and finance for further review. The committee has been given one month to report back with its findings.
During the plenary, Hon. Sa’ad Olumoh, Chairman of the House Committee on Budget and Economic Planning, outlined key aspects of the proposed budget, which includes a projected deficit financing of N408 billion. Olumoh expressed concerns over the reliance on loans to finance the deficit, urging caution and advocating for alternative financing options like Public-Private Partnerships (PPP).
“We have to be cautious about it. We need to have a sustainable and pragmatic way of financing our budget so that we don’t rely solely on loans,” Olumoh said. He also called for a thorough scrutiny of the budget to ensure there is no wastage and that funds are used effectively.
The committee’s review will assess the budget’s feasibility and ensure that the government’s priorities are aligned with the fiscal realities of the state.
