Lagos Governorship Race Heats Up As Seyi Tinubu Faces Backlash Over Family Endorsement
Lagos Governorship Race Heats Up As Seyi Tinubu Faces Backlash Over Family EndorsementThe Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly rejected the notion that the governorship seat in Lagos should be handed to the family of President Bola Tinubu. This statement follows the recent endorsements and campaigns backing Seyi Tinubu, the president’s son, as a potential successor to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the 2027 gubernatorial race.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
PDP representatives argued that the people of Lagos would not accept any attempt to impose the president’s son on the state, stating that governance is not a “gift” to be passed down through family lines. Hakeem Amode, the state PDP spokesperson, emphasized that Lagosians will resist such moves, questioning the legitimacy of a system where a son inherits his father’s political position.
“Lagos will not serve him,” Amode said, calling the idea of a hereditary governorship position completely inappropriate. He warned that if the Tinubu faction attempted to employ strategies similar to those used in Ondo and Edo states, they would face fierce opposition from the people of Lagos.
Deji Adeyanju: “Power is Not a Birthright”
Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju also condemned the endorsement of Seyi Tinubu, calling it “absurd.” He questioned whether Lagos had become a monarchy, where leadership is passed down through family ties rather than earned through democratic means. Adeyanju argued that the situation reflects a lack of genuine elections and accountability, turning the electoral process into a mere “selection” of leaders instead of a true democratic contest.
He urged the political leaders of Lagos to act in the best interest of the state, asserting that Nigeria operates under a federal system, not a monarchy, and that leadership should be determined by the will of the people, not by family connections.
Seyi Tinubu’s Endorsement: Support and Controversy
The call for Seyi Tinubu to run for governor gained momentum through the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders (CONYL), who officially endorsed him in a statement issued in Owerri, Imo State. The group praised his philanthropic efforts, particularly his assistance during the Borno State flooding disaster, where he contributed food, clothing, and financial aid to victims.
In addition, the Middle Belt Youths and the socio-political group Friends of Seyi Tinubu (FOST) have also publicly backed his candidacy, citing his leadership potential and vision for Lagos’ future. FOST, in particular, emphasized his combination of intellect, empathy, and strategic insight, positioning him as the ideal candidate for the state’s governance.
Opposition Within the APC: Joe Igbokwe’s Critique
Joe Igbokwe, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), quickly criticized the push for Seyi Tinubu’s governorship bid, calling the endorsement a distraction. He argued that the role of Lagos governor is not for “boys” and accused the endorsement efforts of being a ploy to undermine President Tinubu.
Similarly, a youth group called the Coalition of Lagos Indigenous Youths rejected the endorsement, claiming that there is no vacancy for a non-indigene to occupy the Alausa Government House. They voiced their concerns about the marginalization of Lagos indigenes, arguing that since 1999, no true Lagosian (except one) has held the state’s highest office.
The group further suggested that if Seyi Tinubu is determined to pursue a political career, he might be better suited to seek office in Osun State, where there would be no such controversy over his eligibility. They vowed to resist any attempt to deny Lagosians the right to govern their own state.
The Road Ahead
As the 2027 governorship race approaches, the growing division between those who support Seyi Tinubu’s candidacy and those who oppose it reveals the deepening political rivalry in Lagos State. While his supporters praise his background and philanthropic work, critics argue that the state’s governorship should not be treated as a family inheritance, and that Lagosians should have the final say in who leads them.
