The blaze was sparked by a petrol tanker that overturned in front of a commercial bank on the expressway. Eyewitnesses reported that the driver likely fell asleep at the wheel, causing the tanker to tip over and subsequently explode.

Reports indicate that petrol from the overturned tanker flowed into a drainage system, reaching a nearby community about one kilometer away. The resulting fire caused extensive damage, shattering windows, damaging roofs, and cracking walls of several buildings in the vicinity. Many individuals sustained various injuries, prompting emergency services to respond quickly for rescue and treatment.

Wasiu, an eyewitness, blamed the driver’s reckless behavior for the incident. He described seeing the tanker swaying before it fell, causing fuel to spill into the drainage. Although the fire did not ignite immediately, it erupted minutes later after some individuals began siphoning the fuel.

A resident, Tunde Adewumi, noted the panic as the fire spread while many were still asleep. He stated, “It was a serious incident, but thank God the drainage was constructed; otherwise, the damage would have been worse. About three people were injured, and buildings sustained damage, particularly those near the drainage outlet.”

Confirming the incident, Ogun State Police Command spokesperson Omolola Odutola reported that the tanker driver was injured and transported to the hospital. She explained that the accident occurred when the driver lost control, colliding with the roadside curb. The tanker, believed to be carrying petrol, tipped over and caught fire, which spread to two trucks parked at the Osadol Petrol Station.

While awaiting the fire service, local residents and police managed to bring the blaze under control. The driver is currently receiving medical treatment at Real Divine Touch Hospital in Ibafo.
