Residents And Farmers Clash In Bayelsa, Resulting In One Death And Destruction Of SettlementTensions escalated in the Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State following violent clashes between the Akaibiri and Bumoundi communities and Anam farmers, resulting in one reported death and the destruction of a farm settlement. In retaliation, residents of Akaibiri and Bumoundi reportedly launched an attack, setting the farm settlement ablaze. The Anam farmers, originally from Anambra State, have been cultivating crops commercially in Bayelsa, and the violence has raised significant concerns among local authorities.
The Bayelsa State Police Command confirmed that two individuals are in custody in connection with Abelās murder. Police have warned both communities and the Anam farmers against taking the law into their own hands.
During a stakeholdersā meeting attended by the state deputy governor and representatives from the affected communities, the Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, represented by Deputy Commissioner of Police Gabriel Elaigwu, assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted.
The state government urged non-indigenes to respect local laws and customs to maintain peace. Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo emphasized the need for visitors to be formally introduced to community leaders to enhance security and aid in identifying criminals. He encouraged community vigilance and active participation in maintaining stability.
Ewhrudjakpo stated, āI appeal to all communities in Ekpetiama to maintain peace. The police should coordinate with other security agencies to ensure a strong presence in the area until this matter is resolved. We encourage the formation of vigilante groups to reduce self-help actions. If a theft occurs, report it to the police instead of taking matters into your own hands.ā
HRM King Bubaraye Dakolo (Agada IV), the Ibenanaowei of Ekpetiama Clan, thanked the state government for its prompt intervention and urged the police to ensure that those responsible for the murder and the destruction of the farm settlement are held accountable. He called on the Anam farmers to respect local customs and the leadership hierarchy.
Chief Bernard Ozoekwe, speaking on behalf of the Anam farmers, expressed gratitude for the stateās quick response and reaffirmed their commitment to being law-abiding citizens in their host communities, highlighting their long-standing presence in Bayelsa.
