The administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in Lagos State has revealed a traffic diversion initiative along Adeniji through Falomo, including Bourdillon and Queens Drive on Lagos Island. This decision was confirmed through a statement issued on Friday by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi.
The diversion aims to facilitate the repair of deteriorated asphaltic sections of the roads. Scheduled to commence on Monday, May 13, 2024, the repair work is expected to conclude on November 7, 2024.
“To mitigate traffic implications, the repair works will be conducted in phases. Phase 1 will concentrate on the stretch from Glover Road Junction on Alfred Rewane Road to Falomo Roundabout, starting from Monday, May 13, 2024. During this phase, the road section from Glover Junction to Falomo Roundabout will be closed to traffic.
“During the first phase of repair works, motorists traveling on Alfred Rewane Road towards Falomo Roundabout will divert left at Glover Road Junction onto Thompson Avenue to access Falomo Bridge via Bourdillon Road and continue their journeys.
“The opposite side of the road will remain open to traffic (i.e., Falomo Roundabout heading towards the Mainland),” Osiyemi explained.
The commissioner stressed the importance of patience among drivers during the partial closure, a critical aspect of the traffic management plan for repairing the asphalt pavement on the affected road segments by the Federal Ministry of Works.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has urged Lagosians affected by the ongoing demolition of houses in some parts of the state to apply for compensation. The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, conveyed this during an interview with Arise Television on Friday.
Wahab assured that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration empathizes with the residents and will handle each application on an individual basis.
“Compensations are processed based on application and treated on a case-by-case basis. Let those affected apply; don’t restrict compensation applications to just Mende Villa. We will take them to the governor for approval.
“This is a government that empathizes with the people. Let’s acknowledge it, climate change is real. Let’s embrace it and not let emotions override. Compensation is a matter of rights. As a state, I know the amount we are granting to the people of Ilasan Jakande. I won’t disclose it, but over two thousand individuals are receiving compensation. Even squatters who are not allottees are being compensated to find alternative accommodation,” Wahab stated.
The commissioner explained that the demolitions were swiftly enforced due to the government’s discovery of misconduct by developers or homeowners.
“We served them contravention notices; we engaged stakeholders. This has been ongoing for the past 7 months, and we didn’t begin enforcement until we were sure we had reached everyone. We aren’t hesitant to enforce our laws.
“On those whose houses were demolished, as Tokunbo Wahab, I feel remorseful because I’m human. I witnessed distressed individuals. Nevertheless, I’d rather have those individuals distressed and safeguard the lives of 22 million Lagosians from flooding.
“When they predict Lagos will be submerged in 50 years, should we sit idly by and watch it happen? We are choosing to do the right thing, albeit it’s sometimes painful,” he concluded.
