Speaking during an appearance on Channels TV, Sheriff dismissed the chances of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) winning power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), stating that the ADC does not control any state and, therefore, cannot win a national election.

When the anchor countered by pointing out that Peter Obi’s Labour Party also didn’t control any state but still secured the most votes in Lagos, Sheriff replied:

“Peter Obi’s support came mainly from his party and ethnic group, the Igbos. They voted for him, and that is expected.”

Pressed further on how Obi managed to win in Lagos, which is not in the South East, Sheriff responded:

“There are more Igbos in Lagos than any other ethnic group. I’ve lived in Lagos since I returned from England in 1980. The city is heavily populated by Igbos.”

Asked whether some Yorubas also voted for Obi, he remarked:

“If they did, they were very few.”
