The latest modus operandi employed by ‘One Chance’ robbers involves the use of Aboniki, a potent and fiery balm, which they apply to victims’ eyes to disorient and incapacitate them.

Several victims, undergoing medical treatment at a Lagos hospital, shared harrowing tales of their encounters with these robbers in Alapere. One victim, speaking anonymously, disclosed that she fell prey to a violent attack on January 23. Recounting the incident, she revealed being on her way to work from Alapere Estate, boarding a Sienna bus destined for Ajah.

Despite the usual hustle and bustle in the morning, the Sienna bus appeared less crowded than typical Lagos commercial vehicles. The victim, along with another lady, found themselves among eight passengers. The driver, playing gospel music, took an unexpected turn towards Oshodi instead of heading straight to the Island road, Iyana-Oworo.

At this point, the driver signaled his accomplices, announcing, ‘Guys, operate immediately.’ Chaos ensued as one assailant grabbed the victim’s neck, another targeted the other lady, and a third individual seated at the front participated in the criminal act.

Forcing the victims to lie down, the robbers snatched belongings, extorted money, and demanded phones and passwords. The violence escalated, with one victim enduring multiple hammer strikes to her knee. Threats of rape and the application of Aboniki to her eyes followed, along with the removal of valuables like earrings. Eventually, the victims were pushed out of the moving vehicle.

The victim, narrating her ordeal, emphasized the frequency of such incidents in the Ogudu, Alapere area. She recounted reporting the incident at Ogudu Police Station, where a policewoman revealed the ongoing challenges in preventing commuters from boarding private cars in the area.

In a separate incident, a doctor, choosing to remain anonymous, shared her experience with ‘One Chance’ robbers in December 2023. Unbeknownst to her, she boarded a mini-bus occupied by robbers equipped with a Point of Sale (PoS) machine. The criminals managed to withdraw a significant sum of money from her accounts, highlighting the evolving tactics of these criminal gangs.

The victims and concerned individuals are urging heightened vigilance, emphasizing the emergence of new criminal elements in Lagos.
