The incident unfolded when the ASP and a team of officers responded to a distress call about an accident at WEMCO junction along Mobil Road. They arrived to assist in evacuating a truck that had struck an Okada rider.
Upon arrival, the police were met with aggressive resistance from a group of riders who demanded that the truck be set on fire. The situation escalated after the Okada rider succumbed to injuries from the accident, intensifying the anger of the motorcyclists toward the police.
Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, condemned the incident as a senseless act of violence. He stated, “Upon reaching the scene, our team encountered a large crowd of motorcycle riders. While attempting to clear the truck, the patrol team was attacked by the riders, who insisted on burning the vehicle. Unfortunately, one ASP, aged 46, was struck in the head and died at the scene, while the truck driver managed to escape.”
Following the violence, five suspects have been arrested, and a manhunt for additional perpetrators is currently underway.
