Lagos Secretariat In Ikeja Shut Down By NLC Strike

Beginning as early as 7:30 am on Monday, striking workers effectively sealed the access gates to the Secretariat, barring entry to all vehicles and personnel. Armed security personnel from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command were deployed to oversee the situation, ensuring order and security amidst the protest.

The closure encompasses various governmental offices, including the Governor’s office, the Deputy Governor’s office, the State House of Assembly, ministries, departments, agencies, banks, and other businesses operating within the premises. Despite warnings circulated by union leaders, urging workers to stay away from the office, some attempted to report for duty but were denied access.

Mrs. Funmi Sessi, the state chairman of the NLC, was present on-site, overseeing the strike’s compliance and ensuring the effective closure of gates to prevent unauthorized entry. Expressing frustration with the government’s perceived insensitivity to the plight of Nigerian workers amidst challenging economic conditions, Sessi directed officers to extend the strike’s enforcement to other public offices, including courts and electricity branches.

As of 8:30 am, there was complete compliance with the strike among Lagos workers, with no reported incidents of disorder. Despite directives from the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) for journalists to join the strike, some representatives from various media houses remained on-site, monitoring the unfolding developments.
