The controversy follows a public disagreement involving the late actor’s widow, Stella Maris, and some of his children from previous relationships over the reported sale of properties belonging to the deceased comedian.

Reacting in a post shared on Instagram, Rita Edochie argued that the unfolding events reinforce her belief that polygamy often creates deep divisions within families.

According to the actress, regardless of cultural arguments in its favour, polygamy has contributed to conflicts that undermine unity and lasting peace in many homes across Nigeria and Africa.

She also expressed the opinion that the late Mr Ibu made poor decisions regarding his family structure, saying the current disagreements serve as an example of the problems that can arise after the death of a family patriarch.

Edochie maintained that, in her view, repeated experiences have shown that polygamous homes are more vulnerable to rivalry, jealousy, unhealthy competition, divided loyalties and inheritance disputes.

She added that such tensions frequently become more pronounced after the death of the head of the family, when disagreements over property and other issues emerge among surviving relatives.

Describing the situation in Mr Ibu’s family as unfortunate, the actress said the public nature of the dispute is painful to witness.

While acknowledging that every family has its own unique circumstances, Edochie said the ongoing conflict should serve as a lesson to people already in polygamous marriages or those considering such family arrangements, warning that they should carefully reflect on the possible long-term consequences.
