Lawmakers Extend Easter And Sallah Break Until April 23
Recent reports indicate that the House of Representatives is poised to resume activities in the main chambers following the conclusion of the Easter and Sallah break. It’s noteworthy that members have been utilizing a temporary chamber since the commencement of renovations in 2022.
The Senate chamber, along with various sections of the National Assembly building, is presently undergoing renovations. According to a memorandum issued by the Clerk, Dr. Yahaya DanZaria, and reviewed by The Nation on Friday, the resumption date has been postponed from Tuesday, April 16, to Tuesday, April 23, 2024.
The memorandum states, “Dear honorable members, I write to respectfully inform you that the resumption date from the ongoing recess has been rescheduled from Tuesday, April 16, 2024, to Tuesday, April 23, 2024. All inconveniences are highly regretted. Your understanding and cooperation regarding this change are highly appreciated. Please make necessary adjustments to your schedules and ensure your presence on the new resumption date. I wish you all productive constituency engagements during this extended recess period. Please stay safe and take all necessary precautions.”
The decision to renovate the National Assembly complex was prompted by frequent flooding due to heavy rainfall. Initially budgeted at over N30 billion in 2019, the renovation project faced criticism, resulting in a revision down to N9 billion.
