Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has announced its intention to introduce labeling for AI-generated media starting in May, aiming to address concerns regarding deepfakes and uphold transparency standards on its platforms.

In a strategic shift, Meta will cease the removal of manipulated images and audio that do not explicitly violate its policies, opting instead for labeling and contextualization to preserve freedom of expression. This decision follows criticism from Meta’s oversight board, which urged the company to revise its approach to manipulated media due to the rapid advancements in AI technology, which can easily produce convincing deepfakes.

The new labeling system, set to roll out in two phases, will identify content created or altered with AI, including videos, audio files, and images. Content deemed to have a high risk of misleading the public will receive more prominent labeling. Monika Bickert, Meta’s Vice President of Content Policy, emphasized the importance of transparency and additional context in addressing such content.

These measures align with an agreement among major tech companies and AI stakeholders to combat manipulated content aimed at influencing elections. Meta, along with Google and OpenAI, had previously committed to adopting a common watermarking standard to tag images generated by AI applications.

Under the new policy, AI-generated content will be labeled beginning in May 2024, with the removal of manipulated media solely based on the previous guidelines ending in July.
