The decision came after adopting a motion titled, “Illegal Incarceration of Okumah Chika and Discriminatory Arrests of Nigerians in the Republic of Benin,” sponsored by Hon. Kingsley Chinda (PDP, Rivers) and eight others during plenary.
Chinda highlighted the case of Okumah Chika, a Nigerian residing and working legally in Benin, who was reportedly arrested by the country’s Police Service on April 18, 2023.
Expressing concern, Chinda noted that despite confirming Chika’s legal employment at ESFAM University in Port Novo, where he worked as an Administrative Staff, handling tasks such as processing admissions and facilitating academic guidance, he has been held at Akpro-Missérété Prison since April 26, 2023, on allegations of internet fraud.
The motion emphasized the worry about the unlawful and discriminatory arrests and detentions faced by many Nigerians in the Republic of Benin, who are legal residents involved in lawful enterprises.
