In addition to the substantial financial demand, the groom-to-be also asked his friends to contribute towards the purchase of family fabric, commonly known as asoebi.
The attorney recounted his experience, expressing initial excitement about the upcoming wedding festivities. However, his enthusiasm turned to disbelief when the groom announced the sizable contribution requirement.
In a statement, the attorney explained, “A not-so-close friend created a WhatsApp group last week for his wedding. I was initially looking forward to attending a wedding celebration after a long time.”
He continued, “After discussions about asoebi and other details, he proceeded to inform us that we, the members of the group, would be expected to contribute at least 200,000 Naira each for the wedding. The deadline for payments, which caught me off guard, was set for the end of May, with the wedding scheduled for June.”
Feeling overwhelmed by the financial demand, the attorney quietly exited the group and opted to block the groom on all social media platforms, including WhatsApp.
This story has sparked discussions about the financial expectations surrounding weddings and the boundaries of friendship in Nigerian society. While some may view the attorney’s action as drastic, others commend his decision to prioritize his financial well-being and personal boundaries.
