The video sparked significant outrage on social media, leading many Nigerians to call for Akpabio’s removal from office. Idam criticized the remarks, recalling Akpabio’s previous claim of distributing two million naira to senators for enjoyment.
Idam urged Nigerians to hold their leaders accountable and demand apologies for misconduct. In his statement, he said, “While suggesting that Nigerians should eat wherever they find food may sound like honest advice, it is hypocritical, especially coming from someone who does not live by that principle. A Senate President who boasts about enjoying time with his family while hunger protests rage demonstrates a lack of empathy.”
He also referred to allegations regarding funds sent to senators during their vacation, noting that the details are currently under scrutiny in a case pending before the Federal High Court in Abuja (suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1394/2023).
Idam emphasized the need for citizens to demand accountability from their leaders, stating, “Until Nigerians insist that leaders resign or apologize for their misconduct, our institutions will continue to lose respect. This disregard for the National Assembly is why many invitees feel free to ignore its summons, as many principal officers have done in the past.”
He concluded by asserting that the integrity of the National Assembly must be upheld through the conduct of its officers, warning that indecorous behavior should not be treated lightly.
