The recent allegations raised by Edo State Governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo, aka Akpakomiza regarding the outgoing administration’s last-minute actions, warrant attention. These include the alleged looting of state assets, drawdown on bank loans, and questionable appointments.
Despite the Obaseki-led government’s denial and justification, citing precedent, a right to completely utilise their tenor, and haste on the part of the in-coming adminstration, these actions have serious implications for the incoming administration’s intention to deliver democratic dividends.
The inauguration of a governing council for Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma and the Civil Service Commission, coupled with allegations of unscrupulous bank credit utilization, have sparked concerns. Even the Deputy Governor, Mr. Philip Shiabu has publicly dissociated himself from these decisions.
If true, the financial institutions involved would have breached their fiduciary responsibility and credit risk management expectations. Global best practices dictate winding down government exposure near election seasons.
The government’s continuity necessitates responsible asset management. The outgoing administration must protect Edo resources, as sworn under oath. Justifying actions by precedence is unacceptable.
To demonstrate good faith, the outgoing administration should ensure a seamless transition, marked by completeness and conclusiveness. The Senator Okpebholo administration has a significant mandate to fulfil, and replacing looted assets would divert resources better allocated to critical sectors like education, health, and infrastructure.
The Edo people’s trust must be upheld, and the incoming administration’s focus should not be compromised by unnecessary distractions. End.
