Nwowu was ambushed and fatally shot on Wednesday evening in his hometown, Mgbidi, by unidentified gunmen.
According to sources speaking to Daily Post, the attackers intercepted his vehicle and shot him, leaving the motive for the killing unclear and sparking fear across the state.
In response to the tragic incident, the Orlu Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), of which the deceased was a member, announced that court proceedings in Mgbidi, Oguta, and Omumma would be suspended. The branch also called an emergency meeting for its members.
A statement from Chukwuemeka Okoro, a representative of the branch, confirmed that the emergency meeting would hold at the High Court in Mgbidi.
“Following the gruesome murder of one of us, CHINEDU NWOWU, last night in his town, Mgbidi, all lawyers of the Oru/Oguta Forum are hereby notified of a crucial emergency meeting this morning at 10 am at the High Court, Mgbidi. The Mgbidi, Oguta, and Omumma High Courts will not sit today. Please, be punctual,” the statement read.
NBA Orlu Branch Chairman, Ben Amukamara, also confirmed that lawyers were gathering at the Mgbidi High Court to discuss the incident. He reiterated that court sessions in the affected areas would remain suspended in light of the tragic event.
As of the time of this report, Henry Okoye, the state police spokesperson, had not provided any comment on the investigation into the lawyer’s murder.
