The leading gubernatorial candidate in the forthcoming Edo Election, Olumide Osaigbovo Akpata, has made headlines by declaring his full support for the Oba of Benin and the Royal Palace in a widely circulated video.

It’s no secret that recent controversies have swirled around the Royal Palace in Edo South. At the heart of the matter is Governor Godwin Obaseki’s proposal to establish seven Traditional Councils within the seven local governments of Edo South. This move has been interpreted by many as an attempt to undermine the authority and supremacy of the Oba and the Benin Kingdom.

In response, the Oba of Benin suspended the Enigies and Chiefs who were reportedly supportive of Obaseki’s proposal, viewing their actions as a direct challenge to his authority. Now, these chiefs are in court to challenge their suspension, amidst public opinion and street gossip suggesting that it was sponsored by the sitting Governor, Godwin Obaseki.

Former NBA President Olumide Akpata has garnered attention on the internet for aligning himself with the Oba Of Benin and the Royal Palace, earning praise from Edolites.

Akpata, in explaining his support for the Oba Of Benin, cited his deep roots in the Benin heritage. He revealed his lineage, stating that he is descended from both Benin Parents, with his father from the Akpata family and his mother from the Obasohan/Ize-Iyamu family. Despite being raised in Warri, he emphasized that he was brought up to be well-grounded in his heritage.

The Labour Party candidate also emphasized that an attack on the Oba and the throne is an attack on him personally. He expressed, “As a Benin man, I have held the position of president of the BAR, and I have traveled extensively around the world. Therefore, I proudly assert my heritage. Anyone or anything that attempts to denigrate or undermine the throne of the Oba of Benin is attacking me because there is a spiritual connection between every Benin man and the palace.”

He continued, “Only a fool would say that an attack on my father is not an attack on me. I am resolute in my decision to do everything in my power to protect the dignity of the Oba of Benin and the Palace. As a Benin man, this is my heritage, and we are respected because of the palace. I lose my value if the Throne of my King is insulted.”

In conclusion, Akpata asserted that only a Benin Man who has not been properly brought up or has not lived in the area would participate in activities against the Palace.
